We aim to eliminate deaths and disease from congenital syphilis
THE PROBLEM
140,000
stillbirths
Every year congenital syphilis causes 140,000 stillbirths and 60,000 newborn deaths - this is entirely preventable.
60,000
newborn
deaths
Syphilis testing rates of mothers in low- and middle-income countries are low, with only 54% of pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa tested, despite cost-effective tests and treatment.
THE SOLUTION
We support countries to screen pregnant women with rapid Syphilis/HIV dual tests, and treat syphilis-positive women with penicillin.
Treatment is very effective - Treating a pregnant woman leads to:
-
97% reduced risk of passing syphilis on to newborns
-
82% reduced risk of stillbirth
-
82% reduced risk of newborn death
